Every Halloween party needs a centerpiece, and nothing says “welcome” like a severed hand floating in a bowl of red punch. Zombie punch is a simple fruit punch with a frozen “ice hand,” made by freezing water or juice in a food-safe glove, plus lychee “eyeballs” bobbing on the surface.
The hand slowly melts during the party, which is either a cooling feature or a dramatic metaphor, depending on how late it gets.
This is a classic, well-known party recipe, not an UglyFood invention, and we haven’t kitchen-tested this exact version ourselves. Follow your package directions where they differ. For more horrors, see our disgustingly delicious Halloween recipes.
At a glance
- Serves: about 16 cups (around 3.5 litres)
- Prep: 20 minutes + overnight freezing for the hand
- Difficulty: easy
- Gross-out level: 3/5, 4/5 with eyeballs
Ingredients
- For the ice hand: 1 new, clean, food-safe disposable glove (nitrile or vinyl, powder-free, not latex) and about 500 ml (2 cups) water or fruit juice
- 8 cups (about 1.9 l / 64 oz) cranberry juice or another red juice
- 4 cups (about 1 l / 32–34 oz) chilled ginger ale or lemon-lime soda
- 2 cups (480 ml) orange or pineapple juice
- For the eyeballs: 1 can (about 565 g / 20 oz) lychees in syrup, drained, plus about 20 blueberries or pitted cherries
- Ice cubes
Steps
- The day before, rinse the glove inside and out. Fill it with water or juice, squeeze out the air, tie the end tightly with a clip or knot, and freeze it flat on a tray (with the fingers slightly curled) overnight.
- Make the eyeballs: push a blueberry or a pitted cherry into the hole of each drained lychee. Chill until needed.
- Just before serving, mix the cranberry juice and orange or pineapple juice in a large punch bowl. Add the ginger ale or soda last, so it stays fizzy.
- Peel the glove off the frozen hand. Run it under cool water for a few seconds if it sticks. Float the hand in the punch, fingers up.
- Add the lychee eyeballs and some ice cubes. Serve with a ladle.
How to make it look worse
- Blood-red hand: freeze cranberry juice in the glove instead of water. Or freeze water with a few drops of red juice swirled in for a veiny look.
- Bones and bits: freeze gummy worms or raspberries into the hand.
- Green zombie: use lime soda and a pale green juice for a swampy version.
- Clawing out: lean the hand against the bowl’s edge so the fingers grip the rim.
- Fog: for a foggy effect, put a small bowl of dry ice and warm water inside a larger outer bowl, never in the drinks. See the safety notes.
What does it taste like?
Like a fruity, fizzy cranberry punch: sweet-tart and refreshing. The lychee eyeballs are juicy and floral, with a burst of berry in the middle. Only the visuals are undead.
Allergy and food-safety notes
- Gloves: use only new, food-safe, powder-free nitrile or vinyl gloves. Avoid latex, since latex allergy is common. Don’t serve the glove, and check that no glove pieces are left on the hand.
- Dry ice: it’s optional and only for looks. Never put it directly into drinks, never touch it with bare hands, and never let anyone swallow it, because it can cause serious burns and internal injuries. Use it only in a separate container, in a ventilated room, and keep it away from children.
- Small children: whole lychees, cherries and grapes can be choking hazards for young kids. Cut the fruit into small pieces for little ones.
- Alcohol: this punch is alcohol-free. If adults want a spiked version, serve it in a separate, clearly labelled bowl.
Variations
- Adults’ version: add white rum or vodka to a separate, labelled bowl.
- Lower sugar: use unsweetened cranberry juice with sparkling water instead of soda.
- Ice fingers: freeze juice in individual fingers of the glove for smaller drinks.
